Urban buses
In addition to the main local buses there are two urban buses, the L-1 and L-2.
Here are the timetables and routes. Unfortunately there aren't any Google maps for these.
If you are staying on the Carihuela or in Montemar (the part near the sea) then the L-1 may be useful to you.
If you are staying near Playamar then the L-2 may be useful to you.
A single journey costs 1,30 €. You can also buy a ten journey Bonobus card from the Portillo Office in Torremolinos for 5.90 €, a significant saving. You don't have to buy a card each.

Picture of the Portillo Office
I've included a picture of the office as it is easily missed.
These buses are well worth trying out as you will get to see parts of Torremolinos that you might well otherwise miss. The L-1 drops off and picks up at the street market on Thursdays and Sundays.

Going further
It is probably best to go to the Portillo Office in Torremolinos for bus times and to buy tickets.
Some buses are run by other companies and some do not pass through Torremolinos so you may need to go to Málaga or Fuengirola to catch a bus.

Coach trips
Several companies also run coach excursions and you can usually be picked up and dropped off somewhere near where you are staying. The coaches are generally air-conditioned and there will often be a guide on board (For some trips the explanation of where you are may only be in Spanish. Always check before you go.) Popular trips are to Gibraltar for sightseeing or just for shopping (Coaches are not normally delayed by the current border problems), Ronda, Nerja and Granada. When booking, please make sure that the operator has a CIAN number - this ensures that they are licenced and have insurance.
Booking through a local travel agent is probably safest.
